Meet Tom & Heather B.
We deeply appreciate your consideration of our family as you make this courageous and generous decision. We have been hoping to expand our family for quite some time and we are eager to give the newest member of our family all the unconditional love and support that we currently share with one another.
As you are the one that gave your child life, you will always be a part of your child’s life story. Once the child is old enough to understand, we plan on telling the child the story of their birth and how they became a part of our family. When we tell the child their birth story we will share as much or as little of your story as you are comfortable with. We are open to various forms of communication and even occasional visits. We want you to know that your child is in a loving and supportive home.
Meet our family:
Heather and Tom have been married for 16 years and have two children together. Our oldest daughter, Anastasia, is ten years old and in fourth grade. Our younger daughter, Emaline, is seven years old and in first grade. We love being parents, so it has always felt natural to expand our family, but because there were complications with both pregnancies, we were hesitant to try for another child. As time went by, we felt as if God was putting adoption in our hearts. When we shared the idea of adoption with our daughters, their enthusiasm and support solidified our decision to move forward. In fact, the girls were so eager to gain a sibling that our oldest asked to help with the paperwork and our youngest offered her entire life savings to help with adoption costs.
Heather teaches mathematics at a local community college. The flexible nature of her schedule allows her to be home with the girls over summer and winter breaks. It has also allowed her to volunteer several days each month at the girls’ Montessori preschool and to teach Vacation Bible School in the summer. When the girls are not at school, Heather enjoys taking them on adventures. These include bike riding in the Metroparks, trips to the beach, creek walking, roller skating, and going to museums or festivals.
Tom is a designer at a small software company that makes apps and websites. He enjoys playing guitar and bass, building LEGO sets with the girls, working on the house (one weekend he painted both girls’ rooms as a surprise), and helping the girls with Girl Scout projects like building a derby race car with Anastasia.
Anastasia enjoys reading graphic novels, writing stories, and creating art. She is a hard worker, both at school and at the gym where she participates in competitive gymnastics. She has a huge heart and takes her role as big sister seriously. Emaline has told us that she knows she will be a great big sister because she has learned from the best.
Emaline enjoys playing with her doll house, dressing up in costumes, and dancing her heart out. She is affectionate with her family and friends, never missing an opportunity to cuddle with a loved one. She is exuberant, often overflowing with energy and excitement and she prides herself on being one of a kind… which she is!
We also have a dog named Abacus (who we call Abby). She is a retriever-mix, we rescued 12 years ago who loves to go on walks and bark along to music.
Our family values faith, kindness, generosity, learning, and adventure. We use these values to lovingly guide our children to help them become the best versions of themselves. Our goal as parents it to expose our children to as many opportunities as possible and to support our children as they pursue their passions. For one of our children, this has meant keeping our home well-stocked with crafting supplies and making space to create arts and crafts. For our other child, this has meant rehearsing with her as she prepared to audition for a musical.
Each year we go on at least one family vacation. We have traveled to Maine, Boston, Montreal, California, Niagara Falls, Disney World, Denmark, and most recently, France. We hope that through these trips we will bond as a family, make amazing memories, and learn about the world we live in.
We practice our faith by attending church regularly, praying together, giving generously, and serving others. We try to live by the saying “love God, love others, and love the world.” To that end, the girls and Heather regularly volunteer at a community meal and Tom plays bass in our church’s worship band.
Our education plan:
We believe that the first five years are the most important years of a child’s life. We want to ensure that these years are filled with the affection, attention, encouragement, and mental stimulation needed for a child to develop a deep sense of confidence and well-being. In order to give our child the best possible start, Heather plans to take an extended maternity leave. Upon returning to work, we plan to enroll our child at the Children’s Learning Center at Heather’s college and then Montessori preschool. Both of our older daughters have fond memories of their time in these schools and we credit them, in part, for setting our children up for success in first grade and beyond.
Thank you for taking the time to get to know our family. Please know that you and your child are already in our prayers.
